Dear Community,

Hi. I hope you are doing well and keeping healthy. What a crazy time!

I am glad to be the bearer of some good news (which is obviously in somewhat short supply right now)!

The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights just received an e-mail from Mr. Chris Mark (Director of Oakville’s Parks and Open Space department) advising us that the Town of Oakville has been able to safely reopen more of our parks and green spaces for the enjoyment of residents.

When accessing Oakville parks and green spaces, everyone is requested to maintain “appropriate precautions and adherence to social distancing requirements and congregation limits (should) our enthusiastic community groups (and individual coordinators) restart their efforts to assist in the annual spring clean up.”

As also stated in the forwarded e-mail from Colleen Bell (Commissioner of the Community Services Commission), the Town will arrange for bags and gloves to be received and for collected garbage from any clean up to be picked up within twenty-four hours after your clean up is concluded beginning on Monday, May 25, 2020.

Thanks again, coordinators, sponsors and volunteers. Please keep us in the loop regarding any efforts and accomplishments made.

Thanks for your direct involvement in local environmental initiatives! Your support is needed more than ever before.

Stephen Dankowich, executive director, OCCPEHR

We have had a number of people and groups wanting to participate in cleanups who would have participated in the Earth Day/week activities. While they can’t be formalized as traditionally done, we wanted the community to be able to pickup gloves and bags to help where they are able. I wanted you to be aware of this and if possible notify the Coordinators about this opportunity. We will have social media and web announcements but the more people who are aware, would be great.

Dear Mayor Burton and Members of Council:

As you know, Earth Day activities and other community clean up efforts had to be cancelled earlier this spring in response to the global pandemic. Last weekend, we were able to safely reopen more of our parks and green spaces for our residents’ enjoyment. We believe with the appropriate precautions and adherence to social distancing requirements and congregation limits, our enthusiastic community groups can restart their efforts to assist in the annual spring clean up.

Booking Pick Up of Supplies
Starting on Monday, May 25, 2020, a group representative or a Ward Councillor on behalf of a group(s) can contact Mike Viles, Parks and Open Space at to place an order for gloves and bags and book an appointment for curbside or in person pick-up at Town Hall. The pick up will be scheduled Monday – Friday 10:00- 2:00. In the email, the representative needs to specify the following:
Number and size of gloves;
Number of bags; and
Pick up option- curbside or in Town Hall at the screening table.
If the representative has selected the “in Town Hall” option, only one person is to enter the building for pick up and they must go through the screening process. They will knock at the designated staff entrance at the front of the building where a staff will greet at an appropriate distance and provide instruction. If they choose curbside pickup, they will pull their vehicle up to the front entrance at the Service Oakville door.

Arrangements for Bag Pick-Up
The group representative will contact Mike Viles at mike.viles@oakville.cawithin 24 hours of completing the clean up to advise of the boulevard location including intersection and/or street where the bags have been placed. We ask for cooperation on the 24 hour deadline to minimize the possibility of other garbage being dumped there as well
We really appreciate the community efforts to make our community beautiful and safe, never more so than this year. Every effort has impact. Many thanks on behalf of the Parks and Open Space team.

Best wishes. Colleen
